In the ’90s, Mary Timony made the rounds in numerous groups, including the AltRock band Helium. She ventured on her own and released a record in 2005 called Ex Hex, which is where the name of her current band comes from. A couple of years ago, Timony made waves in Wild Flag, comprised of Sleater-Kinney’s Janet Weiss and Carrie Brownstein (also of Portlandia fame). The band released one record, did a tour and disbanded. But that didn’t stop the prolific Timony from forming yet another band, this time tapping Betsy Wright and Laura Harris for Ex Hex. As heard on their debut record, Rips, out next month on Merge Records, the album continues Flag’s Pop-Rockness and leaves behind some of Timony’s past syncopated Math Rock stylings.
